June 2015 – Field Trip to the LIFE FOR MARSH project of the expert on habitats present to the LIFE Platform Biogeographic Seminar, held between May 27th and 28th, 2015 in Sighisoara


Within the framework of the Nature 2000 Biogeographic Process, the LIFE platform meeting on the management of Continental, Steppic, Pannonic and Black Sea habitats was organized between 27th and 28th of May, in Sighișoara, bringing together experts within Europe involved in conservation, reconstruction and management. The first day of the seminar was dedicated to the presentation of the concept, good practice lessons learned from LIFE projects, the establishment of working groups on habitat categories, taking into consideration the interests of the participants and their expertise. After lunch, the actual workshops took place, where best practice techniques, habitat management planning methods were identified and a review of interventions and monitoring costs was made. LIFE FOR MARSH project was represented there by the habitat expert, Iovu Biriş, employee of our associated beneficiary-Forest Research and Management Institute, who will  also participate in the launch of the Luxembourg process between 29th of June and 1st of July. In the evening, the guests opted for the field trip, being able to choose between a visit to ADEPT, beneficiary of the ended LIFE project Saving the Important Pastoral Ecosystems of Transylvania (STIPA) or to the Carpathian Foundation, at the project under implementation LIFE FOR MARSH –,,Restauration and support of the natural processes in the forests and eutrophic marshes  from Prejmer and Harman “.

Consequently, on 28th of May 2015, the LIFE FOR MARSH project team had the honor to welcome 8 experts interested in grassland and forest habitats of alluvial forests of alder and Euro-Siberian forest with Querqus spp., in Prejmer. The field trip started with a visit of Prejmer Fortress, one of the 7 fortified churches included in the UNESCO list of world cultural heritage. Afterwards, the experts went to the site ROSCI 0170 Forest and eutrophic marshes from Prejmer, where the calcareous fens habitat with Cladium mariscus (7210 *) was presented with an emphasis on proper conservation actions, lessons learned, threats, ways of settlement. The same structure was also approached when visiting the forest in Prejmer, where participants had the opportunity to see the effects of flooding caused by a beaver and the alder plantations. To the delight of visitors, a fresh bear track was discovered by the experts of CF in the woods. The guests had lunch, after which the main outcomes of the project on habitat types and most successful approaches to conservation and reconstruction were presented. After lunch,  a visit to Harman Marsh was made, followed by the presentation of  91I0 * habitat Euro-Siberian steppic woods with Querqus sp. in ROSCI 0055 site (DealulCetătii- Lempes), where they observed the oak seedlings planted with a view to support regeneration. In the evening, participants returned to Sighisoara.
