22 Oct 2013 – Discussion meeting regarding the regulation of grazing, establishment of prohibited areas and penalties to be applied for grazing in these areas

Tuesday, 22nd of October 2013, at the Faculty of Silviculture and Forest Engineering, a meeting with a view to establish the grazing rules for the project area, took place. The meeting is part of the actions aimed at diminishing the human negative impact in the sites (Activity C5) and gathered representatives of Hărman and Sânpetru city halls, National Environment Authority, Environment Protection Agency, Forestry Authority Brașov, and the project’s staff. It is the follow up of the meeting with the specialists (15 October), when it was decided that the prohibition/restriction of grazing in the two Nature 2000 sites- ROSCI 0170-The forest and eutrophic marshes from Prejmer and RO SCI 0055- Fortress-hill Lempeș-Hărman marsh is absolutely imperative for the efficiency of the conservation measures. The manager of the project, Mrs. Ionescu Georgeta, made a review of the implemented activities, presented the results of the socio-economic study, emphasized the necessity of the support of the local communities and of the authorities for the good development of the project. The main focus of the agenda was the establishment of a protocol to restrict/prohibit the grazing in the Prejmer forest, fortress hill Lempes, and Hărman marsh. Both guests and experts brought up problems encountered and possible solutions to be implemented. Other initiatives that would bring value added to the area were discussed and arguments about how the proximity of a city like Brașov can be truly taken advantage of were made. Moreover, favorable examples of collaboration between the local communities, the authorities and the project staff in similar areas were given (Orth an der Donau, Austria and Anglesey and Lyn, Wales, UK), where a win-win approach was found. As a conclusion, the authorities expressed their support in combating the excessive grazing, in areas that belong to their administration. Protocols are to be signed that will clearly specify the future restrictions. The complete recording of the meeting is available at the following link: Project meeting 22.10.2013
